Professor Golden (PhD, Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University) is the Sandra Rotman Chaired Professor in Health Sector Strategy at the Rotman School of Management, The University of Toronto, and The University Health Network. He previously served as Vice-Dean, MBA Programs. Professor Golden is the founding Academic Director of The Sandra Rotman Centre for Health Sector Strategy.
He is the Rotman School’s National Director for Health Care Leadership Programs. He has been a faculty member at Insead, The Richard Ivey School of Business, University of Western Ontario, The Stockholm School of Economics, SDA Bocconi Business School, The University of Texas, and Northwestern University’s Kellogg Graduate School of Management.
Professor Golden conducts research in the areas of strategic change and implementation, health system integration and sustainability, hospital boards, organizational strategy and leadership. Among his published work are articles in The Canadian Medical Association Journal, Health Policy, The Strategic Management Journal, Healthcare Quarterly, Healthcare Papers, The Annals of Pharmacotherapy, Management Science, Clinical Oncology, The Academy of Management Journal, The Academy of Management Review, Administrative Science Quarterly, and The Harvard Business Review.
From 2005 to 2010 Professor Golden was Board Chair of the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES). In 2010, he became Board Chair of Rise Asset Development, a non-profit microfinance organization providing start-up support loans and business advice to clients with mental health and addiction challenges.
His advising and executive education clients in the health sector include the office of Ontario’s Premier, Ontario’s Ministry of Health, Britain’s National Health Service, and provinces across Canada as part of CIHR’s ’Best Brains’ advisory program. Other clients include several U.S. and Canadian hospitals including The University Health Network, The Ontario Hospital Association, Mt. Sinai Hospital, The Hospital for Sick Children, The Trillium Health System, The Mount Sinai Hospital, Hamilton Health Sciences, BC Mental Health and Addiction Services, Baylor Medical Center, London Health Science Centre, Sunnybrook College Health Sciences Centre, The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, Credit Valley Hospital and The Trillium Health Centre. Private sector clients include Tieto (Finland), General Electric, and Baxter.
His article ’Transforming Healthcare Organizations’ in Healthcare Quarterly is that journal’s most downloaded article of the past twelve years. He is one of two faculty leading the Canadian Medical Association’s Physician Management Institute’s Leading Change and Innovation program, and in 2004 he was awarded Canada’s Ted Freedman Innovation in Healthcare Education Award.
