Jacob Campbell, PE is a registered professional engineer (Ohio) with a passion for wrong way driving (WWD) research and traffic safety. Jacob completed his master’s thesis work at Ohio University (OHIO) entitled “Human Factors Study of Wrong-Way Driving Events,” in which he performed a driving-simulator based study on human, geometric, and/or environmental factors which increased the likelihood of a driver avoiding a wrong way collision on interchange exit ramps. His thesis work was presented at the at the 2021 Ohio Transportation Engineering Conference (OTEC) and 2021 Applied Human Factors and Ergonomics (AHFE) Conference. In 2018, Jacob was selected by the Transportation Research Board (TRB) Traffic Control Devices Committee to participate in the Traffic Control Devices Challenge, where he presented a poster entitled “An Intelligent Three-Pronged Wrong Way Driving Solution” involving unique methods of wrong way driving detection and communication between devices, vehicles, and roadway users. During his time at OHIO, Jacob was involved in state funded research projects for the ODOT and is adept in reading and understanding ODOT construction plans. During his time at Kimley-Horn, Jacob has provided highway design and traffic analysis to public and private clients. He has worked on more than 50 traffic studies for private and public clients throughout Ohio. His design experience includes ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) systems, traffic signals, roadway geometry, signing and marking plans, interconnect, radar/video detection, lighting design, and subsequent cost estimation. Jacob has worked with public and private clients to develop traffic impact studies and corridor studies.
