个人简介
Dr. Levant’s research focuses on the role of polyunsaturated fatty acids in neuronal functional and neuropsychiatric disorders, and drugs and diseases affecting the CNS dopamine systems. Major research interests are the role of brain polyunsaturated fatty acid composition in postpartum depression and the role of developmental docosahexaenoic acid deficiency in attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder, Parkinson’s disease, and traumatic brain injury. Her key research accomplishments in this area include demonstration that adult rats can experience a loss of DHA from brain phospholipids under certain nutritional and/or physiological circumstances, notably pregnancy and lactation. The neurochemical, physiological, and behavioral effects of this loss of DHA suggest a contributory role for decreased brain DHA levels in the etiology of postpartum depression. She has shown that n-3 fatty acid deficiency during pre- and postnatal life results in altered numbers of dopamine neurons and behaviors relevant to activity and attention, supporting a contributory role for low dietary n-3 fatty acids in the etiology of ADHD and Parkinson’s disease. Dr. Levant has also shown that higher tissue DHA levels, or the acute administration of n-3 fatty acids, produce beneficial effects on traumatic brain injury-induced sensorimotor deficits in a rat model of juvenile brain injury.
