Dr. Bernard Tan is a Professor in the Department of Information Systems at the National University of Singapore (NUS). He received his Ph.D. degree (1995) in information systems from NUS. He has been a Visiting Scholar in the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University (1996 - 1997) and the Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia (1992).
Dr. Tan is Associate Provost (Undergraduate Education) at NUS (2009 - present). He is on the University Promotion and Tenure Committee (2008 - present), the University Committee on Educational Policy (2008 - present), and an Expert Panel of the University Research Committee (2006 - 2010). Dr. Tan is a Fellow of the NUS Teaching Academy (2009 - present) and was its former Executive Council Chairman (2009). He has previously served on the University Teaching Excellence Committee (2004 - 2008), as Head of the Department of Information Systems (2002 - 2008) and as Assistant Dean of the School of Computing (2000 - 2002).
Dr. Tan is on the editorial boards of Journal of the AIS (Senior Editor), IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management (Department Editor), Journal of MIS, and Information and Management. He was previously on the editorial boards of MIS Quarterly (Senior Editor) and Management Science. He has served on the program committees of numerous international conferences.
Dr. Tan has published his research work in international journals, such as ACM Transactions on Computer-Human Interaction, ACM Transactions on Information Systems, ACM Transactions on Internet Technology, Communications of the ACM, Decision Support Systems, European Journal of Information Systems, IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication, IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics, Information and Management, Information Systems Research, International Journal of Human-Computer Studies, Journal of Global Information Management, Journal of Management Information Systems, Journal of the AIS, Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology, Management Science and MIS Quarterly. He has also published his research work in the proceedings of various international conferences in the field of information systems.
Dr. Tan was a winner of the NUS Outstanding Educator Award (2004) (the highest university teaching award), the NUS Teaching Excellence Award (2003), the NUS Young Researcher Award (2002) (the highest university research award for faculty members below age 40), and the NUS School of Computing Teaching Excellence Award (2000). His cross-cultural research work on software projects received Honorable Mention for Best Paper Award in IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management (2003). He was a runner-up in the ICIS doctoral dissertation competition (1995) and was an ICIS doctoral consortium fellow (1993).
Dr. Tan is President of the Association for Information Systems (2009 - 2010). He was a Council Member for the Asia-Pacific for the Association for Information Systems (2004 - 2006). He has served as Advisory Board Member for Ngee Ann Polytechnic (2009 - 2012), External Assessor for University of Malaya (2007 - 2011), External Examiner for City University of Hong Kong (2004 - 2010), External Examiner for Open University of Hong Kong (2002 - 2005), External Examiner for Temasek Polytechnic (2002 - 2006), and Management Board Member for Institute of Systems Science (2002 - 2009).
Dr. Tan has served on the Public Service Scholarship Board (2008), the Education and Learning Sub-Committee of the Intelligent Nation 2015 Committee (the national IT strategic planning committee) (2005 - 2006), and the National IT Youth Awards Selection Committee (2002 - 2007).
