He served as a Committee member of the Committee for the Advancement of FDA Science (2008-2011), and Chair, FDA Scientific Achievement Awards committee, 2010. He serves on the editorial board of Applied and Environmental Microbiology, Frontiers in Microbiology, and Microorganisms and as an ad hoc reviewer for numerous journals. He has received a total of 30 awards including the U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary’s Award for Distinguished Service and HHS Lifetime Achievement Award; CFSAN Excellence in Laboratory Science Scientific Achievement Award, Several CFSAN Exceptional Achievement Awards, and a FDA Commissioner’s Special Citation award. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology of the American Society for Microbiology. He has given over 75 invited talks, has published more than 140 refereed scientific articles or Book Chapters and has given over 245 abstract presentations at international scientific meetings.
