He has more than 20 years of experience in the research areas of enhanced oil recovery, unconventional reservoirs conformance control, CO2 sequestration and characterizations. He has been awarded more than 10 research projects as PI or Co-PI since he joined Missouri S&T with a total of funding of more than 10 million US dollars. He has pioneered the technology of using preformed particle gel for conformance control, which has been successfully applied in more than 10,000 wells to reduce water production and enhance oil recovery. Dr. Bai has published more than 180 papers in peer-reviewed journals and over 120 papers in SPE conferences. He served as the JPT Editorial Committee from 2007 to 2013. He serves as the associate editor for Journal of Petroleum Sciences and Engineering, Geofluids, and Petroleum Sciences. He serves as the Editor Board for Petroleum Exploration and Development. He is a technical committee member of SPE ACTE 2016-2018 and SPE Asia Pacific Oil&Gas Conference and Exhibition (APOGCE) 2015-2019. He is an SPE distinguished member.
