Dr Augustine Asante is a health economist with 15 years' experience researching in the areas of health financing equity and health systems in low and middle income countries. He has worked extensively in the Asia-Pacific region and sub-Saharan Africa evaluating complex health systems interventions, including assessing the impact of health financing and human resources for health reforms on equity of access to health services. His current research focuses on evaluating health financing and universal health coverage reforms in LMICs to support governments' efforts to achieve UHC and other health-related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He has led the implementation of health financing and systems research projects in several Asia-Pacific and sub-Saharan African countries, including Cambodia, Fiji, Timor-Leste, Indonesia, Rwanda and Ghana. He has worked as a Consultant Health Economist for the World Bank in Timor-Leste and also consulted on health systems issues for a number of multilateral and bilateral agencies including WHO and the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT). He is the Co-Director of the International Public Health postgraduate program at the UNSW School of Public Health and Community Medicine and the Co-Lead of the Global Health Research Stream at UNSW. He was the Healthcare Financing Project Coordinator for the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC).
