个人简介
Arthur's journey in pathology began serendipitously, orchestrated by the vagaries of the US military in the late 1960s.1 Arthur was largely self-taught in the field of kidney pathology, although he benefitted from educational courses from masters in the field, such as Jacob Churg, Robert Heptinstall, and Conrad Pirani. While a pathology resident and junior faculty member at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, he was drawn to study electron microscopy under the tutelage of Luciano Zamboni, who had an interest in the ultrastructure of kidney anatomy and development. Arthur subsequently began a long-term collaboration and friendship with one of the authors (Richard Glassock), who was utilizing immunofluorescence microscopy experimentally and clinically, mentoring Arthur in these techniques and in clinical nephrology. Arthur subsequently incorporated the evaluation of kidney biopsies using light, immunofluorescence, and electron microscopies with the patient's clinical and laboratory findings, developing one of the first comprehensive kidney biopsy services in the country in the early 1970s. His skill as a pathologist, depth of knowledge, affability, and love of educating nephrologists and pathologists resulted in the success of the service.
