个人简介
My research can be best described as "what happens if you introduce a technology to a person or an organization." I study the human-computer interface, and I'm especially interested in the dysfunctional consequences of technology use. For instance, why has US healthcare quality not improved and medical errors continue to occur, even after spending $30 billion federal incentives on electronic medical record (EMR) adoption among physicians. My 2001 MIS Quarterly paper on why people discontinue technology use is widely viewed as one of the seminal contributions to research in this area.
I have worked with state and county governments, regional hospitals, and community-based organizations on a wide range of healthcare informatics projects, including assessing the state of healthcare delivery in Manatee County, Florida, estimating the business value of healthcare IT investments, and understanding why physicians resist healthcare IT.
My newest areas of research are social media and innovations, predominantly using big data and analytics. In the social media space, I'm particularly interested in understanding how misinformation (rumors) spread on social media, how people acquire, filter, and process potentially biased information on social media. In the innovation space, I study newer ways of innovating in today's networked world, such as crowdsourcing ideas, innovation contests, user-generated innovations.
