个人简介
The Ault Laboratory, an analytical and physical chemistry laboratory, uses spectroscopic and microscopic approaches to study complex environmental systems, with a focus on atmospheric aerosols, as well as indoor surfaces and engineered nanoparticles. Atmospheric aerosols, 1 nm – 20 µm particles suspended in the atmosphere, represent a challenging system for analytical measurements due to small volumes, complex chemical composition, high ionic strengths, complex surface chemistry, poorly understood interfaces between phases, and continuous evolution through heterogeneous and multiphase chemistry. However, understanding the complex chemistry occurring within aerosols is essential as they are responsible for ~10 % of global deaths annually. Aerosols also represent the greatest uncertainty in predicting future climate, due to impacts on radiative transfer through scattering and absorption of solar radiation, as well as modification of cloud properties and precipitation.
To address these challenges the Ault Group uses spectroscopy to probe model systems for SOA and atmospheric particles to gain insight into their fundamental physicochemical behavior. Specific foci include 1) direct measurements of aerosol acidity, 2) molecular characterization and development of novel methods for measuring aerosol composition, and 3) determining the impact of aerosol phase on heterogeneous and multiphase chemistry. Beyond aerosols, we have expanded to other important systems, including indoor surfaces and engineered nanoparticles. We use a range of spectroscopic and microscopic methods, with a focus on vibrational spectroscopy, to investigate individual particles. Our approach of integrating different spectroscopic methods for single particle analysis is unique and allows us to gain insight into the stochastic nature of particle evolution in the atmosphere.
