Andreas A. Ioannides

Andreas A. Ioannides was born in Morphou, Cyprus, in 1952. He received the B.Sc. degree in physics in 1973 and the Ph.D. degree in nuclear physics in 1976, both from Surrey University, Guildford, U.K. He worked in nuclear physics in the U.K. until about 1988. From 1986, he started working on the inverse problem in biomagnetism at the Open University, U.K., where he developed the first tomographic description of brain activity from magnetoencephalography (MEG) data in 1989. Since 1990, he has been directed the MEG work to applications in neuroscience. He headed theoretical teams in the U.K. from 1988 to 1998, and MEG laboratories in Germany from 1995 to 1998. He moved to the Brain Science Institute, RIKEN, Tokyo, Japan, where he set up and headed the laboratory for Human Brain Dynamics (LHBD-J; 1998–2009). During this period he worked on the development of experimental and theoretical methods for MEG, the determination of theoretical and practical limits for the spatial localization of MEG and mainly on the use of MEG as a research tool for neuroscience. Since 2009, he has been the Managing Director of AAI Scientific Cultural Services Ltd (AAISCS) located in Nicosia, Cyprus. He continues the neuroscience research within the new laboratory for Human Brain Dynamics (LHBD-C) that is part of AAISCS. LHBD-C continues the basic neuroscience research of its predecessor (LHBD-J) but with more clinical emphasis and the additional goal of using basic neuroscience knowledge to develop new clinical and other tools that can be widely accessible.
