Alves Cecília J

Cecília Juliana Alves graduated in Biology from Faculty of Sciences, University of Porto, in 2000. Soon after she integrated the Neurobehavior Unit at IBMC, where she completed a PhD degree in Biomedical Sciences in 2009, exploring the hormonal, neurochemical and behavioral effects of psychostimulants on the adolescent brain. She integrated the Neuro-Skeletal Circuits Group of i3S in 2010 as a postdoc researcher. Since then she has been devoted to the development of mechanistic insights into the crosstalk between the nervous system and skeleton in skeletal pathological conditions, mostly through in vivo studies. In parallel, she has been also involved in the establishment of in vitro platforms to study the communication between bone and nervous system. Recently, she became interested in the study of the neuroimmune mechanisms underlying the inflammatory process in osteoarticular disorders. She published 28 papers in international peer-reviewed and 1 book chapter. She supervised 6 undergraduate students, co-supervised 1 MSc student and supervised 2 MSc students. She participated in the organizing committee of the 3rd Edition of Advanced Summer School-“Interrogations at the Biointerface” and the Glisten Symposium 2017. She is Ad hoc referee for several international peer-reviewed journals (e.g. Brain Research, Neuropeptides, PLOS ONE and Pathophysiology journals). She has certification accredited by FELASA as Category C investigator for animal manipulation and research, and is member of the i3S body for Animal Welfare (ORBEA-i3S). She is also involved in initiatives of public awareness of science (eg. visits to schools, exhibitions, lectures).
