In 1992, I received a Postdoctoral fellowship grant from the Hellenic Society of Nephrology for postgraduate studies in USA (Division of Nephrology, Harvard Medical School, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston MA,Director Prof. Barry M. Brenner). During my 3-year stay in the above Department, I acquired skills in a) whole animal models of glomerular inflammation and ischemiareperfusion injury and b) mesangial and endothelial cell cultures and in vitro assays of cell-cell interaction. In addition, I became proficient with the use of molecular biology techniques such as northern analysis, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and in-situ hybridization. My research was focused mainly on the role of leukocyte adhesion and lypoxygenase products, both in vitro and in vivo in the pathophysiology of glomerular inflammation. This work established that the lipoxins are generated by cell-cell interaction during glomerular inflammation in vivo and are potent inhibitors of leukocyte-endothelial cell interactions in vitro and in vivo. In recognition of my work, I was awarded a grant from the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation USA and I was appointed Instructor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Boston USA.Upon my return in Greece, my research was focused on the determination of various inflammatory mediators including adhesion molecules, cytokines and growth factors in the serum or/and the urine of patients with various types of glomerular disease. The aim of the above studies was to investigate the role of those factors in the pathogenesis of the diseases as well as their potential value as markers of disease activity and the response to treatment. Results of these studies were presented in National and International Congresses and published in National and International Journals. In addition currently, I participate in the studies of European IgAN Consortium and in the POST-VALIGA studies of the ERA-EDTA (European Renal Association-European Dialysis and Transplant Association) Immunonephrology Working Group (IWG).
