Ahsan’s research concerns the development of advanced functional nanomaterials from earth-abundant metals, oxides and chalcogenides. In addition, carbon based materials, porous materials, nanoclusters, 2D graphene and its analogues, nanoarrays and nanoarchitectures are being studied. Investigation of the structure-property relationship of these materials uses characterization techniques including high-end electron microscopy (FESEM and HRTEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy. Among the targets are strategically important applications such as energy conversion devices including clean energy hydrogen production via electrolysis and solar and electrochemical carbon dioxide conversion into clean fuels, as well as energy storage applications (electrodes, electrolytes), ammonia synthesis, corrosion, catalysis and biological applications.
