I finished my studies in the Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (by the University of Santiago de Compostela, USC) in 2006. Since then, I joined the research group of "Veterinary Anatomical Pathology" GAPAVET of the USC, where I began my postgraduate studies and my research activities in ichthyopathology. Since the beginning in September 2006, I have worked on turbot enteromyxosis, mainly in aspects of the immune response, cell death and changes in the digestive neuroendocrine system. My third cycle studies culminated in 2008 with obtaining the Diploma in Advanced Studies after the defense of the work entitled "Characterization of apoptosis in turbot enteromyxosis (Psetta maxima, L.).
During the predoctoral stage I obtained a grant-contract from the María Barbeito Program of the Xunta de Galicia and did two stays at the Torre de la Sal Aquaculture Institute (in the Fish Pathology group) and at the "Dipartimento di Scienze e Tecnologie Veterinarie per la Sicurezza Alimentare" (VSA) from the Università degli Studi di Milano. In 2011 I presented my work for a Bachelor's Degree and obtained the extraordinary award of the Degree in Veterinary Medicine from USC. In 2013 I presented the report of my doctoral thesis, entitled "Enteromyxosis of turbot: clarification of pathogenic mechanisms and pathways of the immune response". I obtained the extraordinary doctorate award, with a special mention for the European Doctorate title, and from which four publications in international scientific journals were derived. Between 2015 and 2016 I complemented my training in ichthyopathology with the Interuniversity Master's Degree in Aquaculture, specialty in Biotechnology, with which I obtained the extraordinary master's degree award.
In addition to the in-depth study of turbot enteromyxosis, I have been able to participate in the study of various diseases in several domestic species, acquiring knowledge and skills in the main methodologies used in veterinary pathology laboratories, from the necropsy technique in different species of mammals, birds and fish, up to the taking of samples, and histological, histochemical, immunohistochemical and electron microscopy techniques.
In recent years, I collaborate in several lines in fish pathology in my research group, which include diseases of species with high commercial value in aquaculture, such as turbot (cryptosporidiosis, tenacibaculosis and furunculosis), sole (tenacibaculosis and skeletal disorders) and trout (rainbow trout gastroenteritis and flavobacteriosis).
At the end of 2020 I was recognized as a de facto diploma and veterinary specialist in aquatic animal health by the European College of Aquatic Animal Health (https://www.ecaah.org/).
